Some More Love For Coral Cottage From HGTV!

Coral Cottage has been getting lots of love lately!  HGTV magazine did a wonderful feature in their July-August edition.

Then last week Erin who writes the popular blog, House of Turquoise, shared pictures of Coral Cottage in honor of her upcoming trip to Tybee.  Lots of turquoise goodness
in those photos!

Erin dropped by our Doc Holiday cottage while she was in town and took some pictures--maybe we will see them on her blog in the future!

Now I am excited to share that HGTV has posted a great recap of the magazine article on their website!

Wow!  I'm thrilled that there are so many who love our little cottage.  If you'd like to see the HGTV online article just click on the blue link!

Coral Cottage is available for vacations if you want to come for a visit.  Click here for more information!

Check Out Coral Cottage In HGTV Magazine!

I'm back....two months ago my trusty, crusty old computer refused to connect to the internet and after mourning and giving it a proper memorial I decided to switch over to a Mac Book Pro.  Easier said than done.  I still don't know what in the world I am doing--it's quite different than my beloved PC but my tech-y son and son-in-law have convinced me that once I learn the ropes I will love it.  It's not love yet, but I am learning.

So after a two month break from this blog.....hi there once again!  I have some exciting news to share.....Last August in this post I shared about the excitement our family had being a part of a photoshoot for HGTV magazine at our Tybee beach cottage,
the Coral Cottage.  Quite a thrill!

We were told our feature would be on news stands in June 2014.  It was not in the June issue but in mid-June Henry and I were in the check-out line at Wal-Mart and we spied a new issue of HGTV magazine.  The July-August issue had been released.  We wondered if this could be the issue we had waited so long to see?!?  Trying to be cool, I casually reached over to flip through a copy.

All photos from HGTV
It was!!!  I was so excited...it took every bit of self-control I could muster not to show it to all of the other people standing around me in the check-out line.

There was a photo of our granddaughter Ella in the Table of Contents...

A photo of yours truly on the editor's page.....

And there was our little cottage...

(For the record I never thought of my little house as "gross"--just tired and needing an update.)
My handsome hubby smiling with me at the front door...

The house tour features ten pages of before and after photos with lots of information about paint colors, design tips, etc.  And there are some great articles about other homes.  Even if you've read all about Coral Cottage as I've been blogging, you should pick up a copy because Elizabeth Beeler did a wonderful job of styling everything!  A million thanks to designer Jane Coslick as well for all she did--too much to list.

I can't resist showing one more picture of our family--gotta get my other little Savannah granddaughter Charlotte into the act.  My daughter Kristen and her husband James were so kind to arrange their family schedule for these pictures.

My sister Crystal, son Jordan and his wife Sarah stayed at Coral Cottage recently during our family reunion.  We had such a great time--I'll have to share some of the pictures!

If you need a little Tybee Time to kick back and relax, Coral Cottage is available for vacation rentals!  We have a fabulous, customer service-oriented property manager in Jim Heflin at Tybee Cottages.  Ready when you are--come on down!

Coral Cottage Is In Cottage Style Magazine! Woohooo!

Wheeeee!  Yippeeeee!  Ahem.

I'd like to be cool, calm, and collected but I can't seem to pull it off!  Finally, after all these months of waiting---

The Coral Cottage has been published in Cottage Style magazine's Fall/Winter 2013 issue!

I can't give enough thanks to Nancy Milligan, the writer of the article (who I shared about here), for loving our cottage and writing such a great story!  Also a million thanks to Sandra Mohlman, our talented stylist, and to Richard Leo Johnson whose amazing photography showed the Coral Cottage off so beautifully!  You can read more about the photo shoot here.

I'm under contract with HGTV magazine to avoid sharing pictures of the Coral Cottage on my blog until their article comes out in June so---sorry!  I can't post any....but Jane Coslick, who was my guide and hand-holder through the amazing and confusing world of home restoration at Tybee,  has posted some on her blog so hop over there for a look.

Hope some of you will pick up a copy if you see Cottage Style on your news stand.  The
Coral Cottage article is first and there are lots of other wonderful cottages featured in the magazine--the whole magazine is a great read!

Wheeee!  Wooohooo!

DIY Tutorial: Stenciling With A Freebie Seahorse Stencil!

I bought this piece to use in the living room at Doc Holiday.  I thought It would be great to put a TV, DVD player and cable box in the top and store other stuff in the bottom half.
I loved this little cupboard in all of it's rustic goodness but I decided the black was just not going to work in the color scheme I had planned, so I decided to paint it.  This is how it went down.

First the piece (or pieces--it came apart into two pieces) was sanded with a medium grit sandpaper and my friend Loretta brushed on Zinsser Cover Stain primer--the one with the gold label.  Then it was sanded lightly with a finer grit sandpaper to eliminate brushstrokes.

Next I painted the piece with Sherwin Williams' Duration acrylic interior paint in semi-gloss.  I had some left over from painting another piece of furniture for the Coral Cottage.  The blue is
SW 6485 Raindrop and the white on the drawers is SW 7005 Pure White.  I let the first coat dry for a few hours and then applied a second coat using a good brush.

I had a little bit of lighter blue paint--SW 6763 Retiring Blue--from painting a dresser so I decided to try putting some stripes on the white part of the cupboard doors and drawer.

After measuring I marked off the lines with Frog Tape, a painter's tape that would come up without damaging the fresh paint.

Next I found a free printable seahorse stencil online to use on the doors.  I printed it and my son Jordan cut the stencil for me using an exacto knife and blue transparency-type stencil "paper" that I got from Michael's.

Jordan is very meticulous and exacting in all he does and he did a
great job getting the stencil just right!

He was supervised by Rafael and Lucy so how could he go wrong?

I measured and placed my stencil on the cupboard door.  Then I taped it in place with
painter's tape....

The key to stenciling is to use paint sparingly and to apply it with an almost dry applicator.  I used a pouncer sponge but you can also use a stencil brush.

Get as much paint off the brush as you can and then apply to the surface in an up and down motion.  If you use too much paint or brush it on in a side to side motion, paint will creep under the stencil and it won't be a clean image.

I was using latex paint and I had a little too much paint on my first attempt so it is not quite as crisp as I wish it were.  I cleaned the stencil and did a mirror image sea horse on the other door with better results.  I am still fairly happy with the overall results so I left it--after all it's handmade!

For knobs I used these glass starfish knobs from an online source.  For more info check out this recent blog post.

This is how the lower part of the cupboard turned out...you likey?

Stay tuned and I'll show you what happened with the top of the cupboard!

Just Like A Magazine!

I'm having a "catch-up" week at home after our busy week at Tybee last week.  I have lots to tell you about Doc Holiday's progress but before I do that I'd like to share a little about the
HGTV Magazine photo shoot at the Coral Cottage.

I already introduced you to Elizabeth Beeler, our stylist, in the last post.  When we finished remodeling and decorating Coral Cottage, Jane Coslick (designer) sent photographs to Elizabeth.....Elizabeth sent them to HGTV to see if they might be interested in featuring our cottage and they were---sooo that is how it came about.

Elizabeth came early to prepare the cottage for the shoot.  She brought in lots of beautiful things (Jane helped provide some of these pretties) and made the Coral Cottage picture perfect!  Then a couple days later when things were ready these talented people flew into town ....

Pictured above from left to right:  Vicky (me), Elizabeth Beeler (Prop Stylist), Jennifer Berno (Home Editor for HGTV Magazine), Kim Cornelison (photographer), Alfie Ferreyra (Kim's husband and business partner who also edits photos), and
Paul Kirkeby (Photographer  Assistant)

They all worked hard from morning to evening for two days getting some fabulous photos!  I stayed out of the way except when asked to show up to be in a few pictures.  The last afternoon our daughter Kristen, her husband James, and their little girls joined me and Henry for some pictures in the backyard.

The camera was linked up to a computer so that Alfie could see everything that the camera
lens was seeing.  Ella watched as the scene was being set...

The afternoon was very bright and sunshiny.  It was interesting to watch as the photographer managed the light with a board that was held up to keep the light from shining directly into her camera lens (or at least that is what it looked like).

The little models enjoyed some rest and snacks after they finished posing.

Charlotte was hungry after playing in the pool.
Ella gave GG a smile.
I got permission to share pictures of the process of the photo shoot but the actual photos of the house in all its glory have to "stay in the vault" until the June issue of
HGTV Magazine comes out next year.  The ones I've seen look just like a magazine :)  and  I, for one, can't wait for June!

Our Cottages Featured On House of Turquoise!

One of my favorite blogs is House of Turquoise!  If you love the color turquoise, you will love this blog where Erin shares inspirational photos of rooms that feature her favorite color.

Recently Erin's mother-in-law took a little vacation to Tybee Island with her sisters and while she was there my friend and design consultant Jane Coslick took her around to see some of the pretty cottages she has worked on...and guess what?

The Coral Cottage and Coast Awhile Cottage were both featured among the cottages on last week's House of Turquoise blog!!!

Cottage Style Meets Coral Cottage!

It's late Tuesday night as I write this post and I've had an amazing day! I can't disguise how excited I was to attend the photo shoot of The Coral Cottage today for Cottage Style magazine.  It was really fun!

Last week I shared with you in this post how the whole thing came about and today it actually happened!  Yeah, I know I've used a lot of exclamation points but exclamation points are what I need to express myself accurately!

This is what happened:  I opened up The Coral Cottage at 9 o'clock this morning and soon the photographer,  Richard Leo Johnson, drove up.  His beautiful work has graced many a magazine and we were so happy to have him on our project.  Turns out Richard is very personable as well as capable and when he learned I was interested in improving my photography skills, he was kind enough to share his knowledge and explain what he was doing so I could understand.

Richard began setting up his camera on a tripod and he connected it to a computer so that we could look at the images as the stylist composed each scene...

...which bring us to our stylist, Sandra Mohlmann, who arrived next with a car full of props from her own collection as well as from various design stores, the grocery store, the florist, etc.  She said she often goes to as many as thirty places to shop when preparing for a project.

Sandra lives in Charleston, SC and I learned that her career as an interior designer led her into her current position of Field Editor and Stylist for Meredith Publications when she assisted in styling her own home for a magazine feature years ago.  Her talent caught the eye of editors and now she styles for many magazines all over the country!  I made it my job to watch and learn as much as possible from her while trying not to get in the way.  Thankfully she was very gracious, showed me what she was doing and allowed me to help a little (not that she needed any help at all.)

Sandra did a lot of this--moving the furniture and accessories for the most pleasing arrangement.
One thing that I found fascinating was that Sandra had what looked like a script that contained a list of photos the magazine wanted taken.  The script described the angles they wanted the shot taken from and the orientation--landscape or portrait--they needed.  Often, this required furniture to be moved around.

See the end table to the left of the sofa in the photo above?  Looks funny from this vantage point where it is so far away from the sofa, doesn't it?

Now look at it from this direction...

It looks good here, doesn't it?  Sandra and Richard wanted to show the shape of the end table and it would not have been seen if photographed close to the arm of the sofa.  Lots more tweaking took place before the final picture was captured--pillows changed around, accessories added, rooms in the distance styled, etc.  It took much time and thought to make it all perfect.  An eye for detail is essential in styling!

One other really cool thing I learned from Richard was that in the Photoshop editing tool you can "stitch" two photos together.  Richard uses this feature frequently to give a fuller picture of the room.  It is often impossible to get everything into one picture with a digital camera.  By putting the camera on a tripod and taking the same photo twice but with a slight shift left or right/up or down, Photoshop can merge the two photos into one and you cannot detect where the "stitching" took place.  Seriously cool.  Maybe even cool enough to make me want to learn how.  Hmmmm.

Richard and Sandra worked hard all day and, after over seven hours, they were satisfied with the pictures of The Coral Cottage.  They should be--they are gorgeous!  Can't wait to see them featured one day in Cottage Style magazine!

Thanks Richard and Sandra!

Be Our Guest, Be Our Guest, Put Our Service to the Test!

I'm humming a little ditty from Disney's Beauty and the Beast--yeah, I know I'm a little corny. This summer we went to The Magic Kingdom with our kids and grands and saw Belle from Beauty and the Beast during our dinner at Cinderella's Castle.  Meeting the princesses was awe-inspiring--at least for all the littlest girlies in the family:)

 All this to say...

The Coral Cottage will be hosting its first guests very soon and I am trying to make sure it is ready.  My rental guru, Jim Heflin, has been coaching me along.  One thing he recommended we get is a guest book.

I've been thinking about this and decided to try to make my own--or at least design my own.  I turned to Shutterfly, my go-to photo book store, to try my hand.  This is what happened:

I collected all my digital images of the Coral Cottage from my Facebook page.  Then I selected my theme and the size of the book.  I picked photo layouts and plugged in the pictures.

This is how it turned out--hope you like it!

Cottage Style Magazine--Here We Come!

I've got some exciting news!  I've known for a while but I've kept my secret "in the vault" just in case it should prove too good to be true.  But now I think it is safe to share.

The Coral Cottage is going to be featured in Cottage Style magazine!

If you've been reading my blog for a little while, then you may remember meeting Nancy Milligan
from this post.  Nancy is a freelance writer who is a frequent contributor to Cottage Style magazine.  When I was setting up housekeeping at The Coral Cottage before Christmas, she came by to see the house and ended up helping out!

You'd better be careful offering to help--I may just accept and put you to work:)
Nancy lives in Colorado and this fall she was attending a writer's conference at Tybee Island.  While she was in town, she was looking for some cottages that might be candidates for future writing projects--so glad she found The Coral Cottage!

Nancy loved the cottage--even in its unfinished condition--and gave pictures to her editor who gave the go ahead to write the feature.

On Tuesday Cottage Style will send a professional photographer and a stylist to do a photo shoot at the Coral Cottage!  Can't wait.  So excited.  I'll tell you all about it next week!

Yaaay! Wooohooo! Applause!

It has taken a while to show you through the process of bringing the yard at The Coral Cottage back to life.  It was quite a job and unlike my lengthy blog posts, the installation of this project was accomplished fairly quickly--in about a week!

With thanks to Bill Griffin of Griffin Landscape Design and Contracting for many of the photos of the finished yard,  here's The Coral Cottage yard Before and After!  Ta Daaa!
